Crosslinguistic Corpus Studies in Linguistic Typology

Corpus-based studies have become increasingly common in linguistic typology over recent years, amounting to the emergence of a new field that we call corpus-based typology. The core idea is take languages as populations utterances and systematically investigate text production across this sense. From usage-based perspective, investigations variation preferences use are at understanding distribution conventionalized structures their diachronic development languages. Specific findings typological pertain universals production, for example, prosodic partitioning; cognitive biases constraining diverse patterns use, constituent order; correlations with language-specific conventions. We also consider remaining challenges typology, particular crosslinguistically more representative corpora include spoken (or signed) texts, its vast potential future.
